Hug a business owner

We have seen evidence of how a fairly strong willed teachers union and a bunch of motivated parents can turn around government policy.

This is a government that is just seeking to do the right thing – pay for what we can afford.

We all love our kids and we fight for them to have the best lives. If that means a lower teacher to student ratio, then who can argue with that? I can’t. Sounds good to me. OK so some of the detail around the policy may have been conveniently overlooked by some with interests of their own to push, but let’s put that to one side. The country made a call (well the government did in the end).

The big issue remains though. We need cash. This country desperately wants to be able to fund better hospitals, see its senior’s die dignified with superb levels of care and have its young educated with the best quality teaching and facilities. But all of that takes money. Money we don’t have. We owe the world a bucket load of cash – debt by any other name.

Where does the money come from? There is only one answer to that. Don’t let anybody else try and tell you otherwise. The answer is Business. Businesses pay our wages. They help us pay our taxes as well as pay their own. Businesses are to be revered. They are to be loved. Maybe it’s time for a “National Hug a Business Owner day?”

These guys and girls are our hero’s. They put everything on the line to open their business. They work harder than they have ever worked in their entire lives before. They have less cash to pay themselves than when they worked for wages. Many times they go without – all for the sake of seeking to make a better world of things – for themselves and their children. By default they do the same for the rest of us.

Entrepreneurs need to be celebrated too. They madly set about trying to do things better than others have done it before them. They create breakthrough inventions or provide higher quality services than others. They build, they break, they build again. Often there’s a bit of collateral damage along the way as they seek to make the changes needed. Run with them… hug them if you can catch them.

Go on… this week wander up to a business owner and just say thanks.

Fight the good fight this week.
